about

The idea for the Journey East EP formed after the release of The Gaslight Troubadours last album ‘Curse Of The Gaslights’ in late 2021, of which Professor Purblind is the producer. The final track on that album ‘Sayonara Means Goodbye’ was a fond nod towards the 60s movie romanticism of the Far East combined with producer Phil Meadley’s (aka Professor Purblind) love of abstract instrumental hip hop (aka trip hop) of the likes of DJ Krush, DJ Shadow and the Mo’ Wax label in the 90’s.

Inspired by the direction of this track he set himself the task of finding more samples and influences from the Orient that could make an interesting EP’s worth of tunes. ‘Teahouse Dub’ follows a similar stylized view of Japanese culture through the lens of post-war American filmmaking to ‘Sayonara’ combined with a love for 70s Jamaican dub – an odd juxtaposition but it seems to make sense sonically. For ‘What Does Michi Mean?’ the idea was to create a tense, cinematic thriller-style tune about the Yakuza (Japanese gangster equivalent of the Mafia). Once again the temptation was to mix the retro Japanese samples with other interesting musical juxtapositions; this time 50s space-age theremin with the twangy guitar sound of Spaghetti Westerns on the chorus style passages.

‘Dance With My Clear Shadow’ was influenced by a Chinese poem about the moon. The words in Mandarin at the beginning say “dance with my clear shadow, what a paradise on earth”. It seemed a poetic, slightly mystical, and fitting start combined with a field recording of birds singing by a lake in China. And finally the track that started it all, ‘Sayonara Means Goodbye’, has been given a new mix for 2022 and rounds off Professor Purblind's journey East.

Teahouse Dub was recently played on Gideon Coe's BBC Radio 6 Music show.

about

The Gaslight Troubadours UK

The Gaslight Troubadours cite their influences as "scratchy old cylinder recordings, risqué Music Hall, 221b Baker Street, old radio show thrillers and Hammer Horror". Although they've been described as "the dark, more twisted cousin of Public Service Broadcasting” their closest musical bedfellows are Mo’ Wax and the likes of DJ Shadow. ... more
